Samsung Gem for Verizon shows up in Best Buy buyer’s guide

We’ve heard talk of the Gem before, and a new listing for the phone in Best Buy’s September buyer’s guide confirms the existence of Verizon’s new low-end Android piece that’ll likely slot in below the Fascinate in Sammy’s lineup for the carrier. Looks like it’s slated to launch with Android 2.1, not 2.2, and will include both TouchWiz 3.0 and Swype — both Samsung staples at this point — along with a 3.2 megapixel cam and 16GB of microSD expansion (though it’s not clear whether they’re going to do you the favor of throwing a card in the box). Despite the high-end name, we’d argue pricing is definitely going to determine the success of the Gem, especially in a world where Vibrants go for next to nothing on contract .

Xbox 360 slimster made over in white, just for the hell of it

Missing your oldie Xbox 360’s bright and airy white finish? Well, Microsoft’s still not willing to sell you a slimmified 360 in any color other than black (excepting the limited edition Halo gear ), but at least you can gaze upon the singular example of what a white one may look like above. This seemingly repainted Xbox 360 250GB (to give it its official, and ridiculous, name) has been lovingly put together over in China and really makes us wonder why Microsoft is depriving us of such snowy good looks

Samsung Fascinate ready for Best Buy in-store pre-order ahead of rumored September 9 launch

Verizon can’t be feeling too hot about being the straggler to the Galaxy S party , but the wait seems to be almost at an end. Best Buy’s just started taking in-store pre-orders for the Fascinate , while the latest internal document leak from VZW indicates a specific September 9 launch for the 4-inch Android handset. That’s when you should be able to snap the Fascinate up along with a prepaid data plan from Big Red, which fits in nicely with earlier unsanctioned disclosures on the matter

Verizon pushing Droid update for Flash 10.1 compatibility

You might recall that Verizon and Motorola’s first go-around at pushing Android 2.2 to the original Droid didn’t include compatibility with the Flash 10.1 install in the Market — but don’t worry, lovers of Flash-based web ads, because the fix is now upon us.

HP’s in-house webOS competition yields about 500 apps, says CTO

A little backstory: HP has an annual in-house event for its employees called TechCon, and this year a challenge was issued to the engineers to make the best webOS app (free phones were offered as incentive). Got that? Good

Exclusive: Droid Pro is the global version of the Droid 2, LG enV Touch 2 will be Android-powered

We’ve learned from a source close to the situation that the rumored global version of the Droid 2 with GSM and CDMA radios is actually the same phone as the also-rumored Droid Pro — although Verizon apparently has a tendency to fiddle with branding right up until the last minute, so the retail name could still change. It’s identical to the current Droid 2 in every way except for the fact that it houses a GSM / HSPA radio for global roaming, though we’re not able to confirm previous rumors that it’ll be available in a white version; presumably, you’ll pay a bit more than the Droid 2’s $200 on contract for the privilege of being able to take your buddy overseas

Sharpie Liquid Pencil, the aftermath: it’s ‘permanent,’ not permanent

And so it comes to this, the final bleak chapter of our time with the Sharpie Liquid Pencil . If you’ll recall, the Liquid Pencil first increased nerd heartbeats around the world a week and a half ago, when it was launched promising to write like a pen, erase like a pencil, and eventually dry like a Sharpie permanent marker. In fact, those were Sharpie’s exact words : “Becomes permanent like a Sharpie marker after three days.” The world seemed yet full of wonder; our ambition was limitless.

Nikon D3100 DSLR hands-on

In addition to the S1100pj and S5100 , we also had a chance to play with Nikon’s 14.2 megapixel D3100 earlier today. Sadly, due to the non-final firmware, we weren’t allowed to obtain live sample stills and 1080p H.264 clips from the prototype DSLR, so we can’t comment too much on the new CMOS sensor’s picture quality. Still, there were some interesting features to take home with
