How-to: stay connected while traveling internationally

It’s a harsh reality that every avid traveler faces, and unless you’re fortunate enough to have been born in a generation where you’re not expected to check your inbox every half-hour, glance over Twitter updates every 7.23 minutes seconds and tell the world where you’re at this very moment via Foursquare, you’ve probably found yourself wondering how on Earth you’re going to remain connected once your swipe that passport and leave the comfy confines of a native network . Staying connected while traveling abroad is no easy task, and while the internet may feel ubiquitous to tech-savvy smartphone owners who remain planted within the borders of their home nation, the world wide web suddenly becomes a whole lot less easy to track down once you plop down on foreign soil. Looking to splurge on a little international travel this summer, but can’t figure out how you’re going to ( affordably ) upload those Twitpics and YouTube videos once you get there?

CPT starts a little transflective LCD fire under Pixel Qi

No, not literally. CPT is showing off some transflective display tech that’s remarkably similar to Pixel Qi ’s, and the good news is that CPT is actually a display manufacturer. Pixel Qi’s tech seems more advanced, with 5X power savings with the backlight off, versus CPT’s 2X, but if CPT can get this 10.1-inch, 1366 x 768 panel onto the market soon for a good price, we think they could find some takers.

iPad 3G works on T-Mobile, can be hacked to send text messages

Here’s a pair of interesting iPad 3G hacks for your lazy Sunday — first, Apple’s tablet is apparently unlocked out of the factory, so trimming a T-Mobile SIM to micro SIM size will get you up and running on EDGE with no further hassle. Not terribly useful in the States, but good news for Europeans who’ll have several carrier options right out the gate. Secondly, MuscleNerd of the Dev Team has discovered it’s apparently possible to send text messages from a jailbroken 3G iPad using a T-Mobile or non-iPad AT&T SIM — the stock AT&T SIM restricts SMS and calls, apparently.

HTC Touch Pro 2 gets a new lease of Android life, loves it (video)

Android for Windows phones — simple concept, simple enough installation, but awesome results. The good people behind the XDAndroid project have been working hard to allow you to get your Google juices flowing nice and freely on your WinMo device and the latest build looks to have all but completed the task. Demonstrated on a Touch Pro 2 — a phone that recently got itself Ubuntu-ized — the Android installation experiences no difficulty in making calls, sending SMS or email missives, or browsing the web.
