You know that ” National Broadband Plan ” that the world keeps yapping about? Sprint’s down with it, and has been since before it ever existed, apparently.

Dell settles with SEC for $100 million, moseys off into sunset

Looks like Dell might finally be at peace with the US Securities and Exchange Commission — for now at least. The company has announced that it’s reached a settlement for “alleged omissions prior to Fiscal 2008″ regarding both its relation with Intel and some accounting this-and-that.

Microsoft Kin gets a software update, still can’t re-tweet

We’re going to go out on a limb and guess that most folks haven’t been losing sleep over the prospect of a Kin software update (or lack thereof), but those that have been constantly watching their One or Two for a bit of good news can now rest a little easier — sort of. While the Kin has received a software update, it’s not the previously talked about one that would add revolutionary features like Twitter replies and re-tweets. It does add a number of other more minor Twitter updates, however, including Twitter avatars and re-tweets from your contacts in the Kin Loop, and the ability to link your Twitter contacts to your Kin contacts.

HP CEO: Palm could end up a ’sub-brand’ of the company

Given the way HP has treated acquisitions like VoodooPC and Compaq, this should come as no surprise — but CEO Mark Hurd is at it again with comments about his company’s recent Palm acquisition to German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine , saying that the brand could “move into the background” and become a “sub-brand,” ostensibly the same as Envy and iPAQ (he gives Pavilion as a specific example). From a marketing alignment perspective, that makes sense — though it assumes that the HP brand is stronger than Palm’s in the target demographics that they’re looking to sell into.

HP Slate no longer a consumer product, will arrive for enterprise this fall

We’ve sensed that something ’s been up with the HP Slate for a while now, and it looks like we’ve finally gotten the first solid confirmation that the Windows 7 tablet as unveiled by Steve Ballmer at CES in January won’t hit the consumer market as planned — speaking at the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference, HP Personal Systems Group VP Todd Bradley just said that the Slate will be “more customer-specific than broadly deployed,” and that it would launch the Microsoft-based tablet “for the enterprise” in the fall. That fits right in with HP telling us the other day that it was in “customer evaluations” as it prepared for the “next steps,” and based on followup comments from Bradley and Palm head Jon Rubinstein, it certainly sounded like the company will focus Windows tablets at the enterprise and develop a variety of webOS devices for the consumer market. Of course, there’s no official announcement yet, so we’ll see what happens — the only thing that we can confidently say is that the HP Slate has definitely succeeded the iPad as the tech industry’s favorite vaporware tablet

White House pledges another $800 million for broadband stimulus

Usually, when we see “stimulus” and “broadband” in the same sentence it’s because someone turned off our Google SafeSearch filter, but today we have one such item that is totally safe for work. According to Information Week , the $7.2 billion in broadband grants and loans that we’ve already seen will be buttressed by an additional $800 million. A total of sixty-six new infrastructure projects (with up to 5,000 new jobs created in the process) are planned to launch in every state of the union (and Washington DC to boot)

FCC launches Spectrum Task Force, unused frequencies become wanted criminals

It’s no secret that Julius Genachowski and his posse up in Washington are taking spectrum reallocation very, very seriously in an effort to nip any danger of a wireless broadband crunch in the bud, and the FCC’s taken another small step in that process today with the creation of the “Spectrum Task Force.” It sounds like the Task Force’s main job is to get the entire agency on the same page with regards to its long-term spectrum planning, ultimately playing “a critical role in the execution of the spectrum recommendations in the National Broadband Plan .” In other words, the critical topic of spectrum reallocation isn’t going away — and while Genachowski continues to emphasize his intention to make license sales by TV broadcasters fully voluntary, we could see things starting to get hostile if the broadcast industry’s mood doesn’t change. Unfortunately, we’re not aware of any plans for these guys to actually dress up in SWAT uniforms and ride around on Segways should the need arise

FCC National Broadband Plan: some of your favorite ISPs respond

Yesterday, the FCC submitted its National Broadband Plan to Congress , essentially requesting that six goals be met over the next decade, including sizzlers like access for “every American” to “robust broadband services,”which apparently equals a minimum of 100 million US homes with “affordable” access to at least 100MBps down / 50Mbps up speeds. Pretty heady stuff, we know
