Infrared Nerf autocannon hunts predators, little sisters too (video)

When it comes to keeping unwanted personnel out of your property, whether that be an estate or an alcove, you can’t be expected to hang around holding the big guns all day long. That’s when you need an automatic-targeting turret, and Rick Prescott’s Infrared Seeking Sentinel is a good, non-lethal choice.

LG’s 31-inch OLED spin-slices its way into our cold LCD hearts

Yeah, we spied a few of LG’s new 31-inch, 2.9mm thick displays the other day , but we hadn’t seen the standard TV-like configurations — which don’t mean too much, because this is still a prototype, but they’re a comfort all the same.

Samsung Wave 723 flaunts Bada, little else at IFA

Samsung just grew its Bada line with a low-end foil to the original Wave , the so-called Wave 723 — and we just happened to catch it hanging out tucked away in a distributor’s booth at IFA this week. Though the leather-grain flip cover is a classy touch, make no mistake that this one is destined for the bottom bits of the full-touch featurephone market segment thanks to a middle-of-the-road TFT LCD that looks pretty washed out and low-res compared to the Wave’s Super AMOLED (interestingly, the 723 is the first Bada phone to use version 1.1 of the platform, whose major addition is support for auto-scaling between multiple resolutions). We were also surprised at how poorly responsive the screen was to touches and swipes; we even thought for a moment that it might be resistive, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

PS3 homebrew jailbreak released into the wilds

Poor, poor Sony. First PSJailbreak splayed wide the PS3’s security model, now PSGroove has arrived calling itself the “open source PSjailbreak.” The code must first be downloaded and installed onto a $30ish AT90USBkey or a $25ish Teensy++ USB development board. After that, homebrew enthusiasts can then execute unsigned third-party apps and games on their PS3.

Nike Air Maxes get a Wii Balance Board infusion

Recently Nike — a shoe company that seems to enjoy a side dish of tech from time to time — challenged 78 artists to “hack” its shoes and come up with something decidedly different than your typical Air Force Ones. Now, a lot of the projects were more art and less tech, but that can’t be said for entrant Nick Marsh’s contribution to the experiment. The designer fused the internals of a Wii Balance Board with a pair of Air Maxes to create a gaming experience that may not be nuanced, but certainly seems capable of making you break a sweat.

PS3 modchip claims to finally allow backing up games without invasive console surgery (video)

Who needs George Hotz anyway? A USB modchip for the PS3 has emerged from the mists this morning, purporting to allow the dumping of games onto nearby storage — the console’s internal HDD and external drives are both a-ok — as well as the subsequent playing of said games without the need for the original disc. Could it be the backup/piracy nirvana Sony loyalists have been awaiting for so long?

WebOS device hacking has reach some considerable heights recently with a mod to bring WiFi to a Sprint Palm Pixi , but it looks like even that’s now been topped by this hack that finally brings the Pre Plus to Sprint.
