The Walkman section of Sony’s booth at IFA this week has an automatic information system that pops up specs on a central display for each model as you pull it away from its base, but there was one unknown model chilling out that popped up nothing more than a “coming soon” message when you yanked it out. What gives, Sony? Why the mystery and suspense?

After a flood of leaks , Verizon’s just officially announced its prepaid data plan for smartphones. The new 3G Prepaid data package will offer smartphone users “unlimited” data for $30 a month, while feature phone users can score 25MB of data a month for $10 with a 20-cent-per-meg overage fee — all contract-free, of course.

Three new iPods under one roof — how could we not throw them on a table and see how they size up against one another? Obviously, the iPod touch is the black sheep here in terms of sheer physical space, but the width / height difference between the nano and shuffle is as marginal as you probably guessed

We didn’t catch any glimpses of an Optimus Pad or anything even close to the monstrous 180-inch plasma we’ve been hearing about, but a quick stroll through LG’s still-under-construction facilities at IFA today revealed the kiosk for its insanely thin 31-inch 3D OLED television , whose price (if it ever even hits retail, that is) is likely to make even Black Card holders squirm. All told, LG’s booth consumes an entire floor of one of Messe Berlin’s many halls, so it’s a big one; the emphasis is clearly on its flat panel TVs, though there are dedicated areas for its Blu-ray gear and store kiosk solution as well. More on all this after the show opens on Friday, no doubt! Sprint’s treating the East Coast to a shot of adrenaline-fueled mobile internet today, with Daytona Beach in Florida, Providence in Rhode Island, and Boston (you know the state, right?) all getting the green light for 4G activation. Notably, this takes the number of markets Sprint has now lit up in sexy WiMAX airwaves beyond 50 and ratchets up the states that have at least some coverage up to 21. It’s also jolly good news for any residents of those three cities that were lustily eyeing the Epic or EVO 4G but felt they couldn’t justify it without an actual 4G network to hook up to

We feel your pain: you love your BlackBerry at work and your iPhone for personal use, but as hardware goes, nothing gets your motor running quite like the Pre’s pebble-esque shell. Trust us, we’ve all been there! Well, a new clone out of China seeks solve all your technological woes by combining an iOS-inspired user interface and the Pre’s body — with an iPhone home button thrown in for good measure, of course — and when the time comes to throw on the suit and tie and head to work, you can switch the UI over to BlackBerry mode. As far as we can tell, it still functions like an iOS clone here, but at least the skin will remind you of the good ol’ Bold days.

Oh, don’t get us wrong, we rather enjoyed our time with Nikon’s S1100pj projector camera, but this here Pico concept design is on a whole other level. We’re talking both in terms of cuteness and inventiveness. You might have recognized by now that one of the Pico’s “eyes” is the camera lens while the other is the projector, but what of the “smile?” Why, that’s your microphone’s sound intake port

We did wonder why RIM was acquiring infotainment specialist QNX Software Systems back in April , and today, according to Bloomberg , much of that mystery has been dispelled. Three separate sources are cited in a report claiming that RIM intends to run software built by QNX on its virginal tablet effort, the BlackPad . It’s curious that the company is opting against upscaling its BlackBerry 6 operating system into the tablet space, though one of the sources suggested that’s due to legacy code hanging around in the still new OS , making it easier to just start afresh when building the slate’s software package.

There are mechanical keyboards , and then there’s Razer ’s newest duo. For the past three years, the gaming accessory company has been toiling in a back room trying to figure out how to really get mechanical keyboards right; according to it, the vast majority of the options today “feature stiff keys that cause key actuation fatigue,” and it has sought to remedy said issue with the BlackWidow and BlackWidow Ultimate. Launched today over at Gamescom, these two keyboards offer key actuation that feels much like a mouse click, with an actuation point that’s actually halfway through the full travel distance.
